Following a thorough assessment of the immovable cultural heritage along the Montenegrin coast, Fortress Španjola has been identified
as an ideal candidate for infrastructure development, envisioned as a Creative Hub.
The initiative aims to ensure the effective use of this cultural property, facilitating its revitalization while protecting it from further deterioration.
Currently, the fort is in a state of disrepair, with several structures in ruin and lacking functional utility. Conservation guidelines emphasize the importance
of protecting, conserving, and preserving the original architectural elements, including the basic volumes, robust construction, and the original materials used in its finishes.
The primary objective of this project is to safeguard the inherited built cultural heritage and revitalize the Španjola fortress complex through minimal yet effective reconstruction
and refurbishment interventions. Ruined buildings will be preserved and formally reconstructed in accordance with their historical volumes and forms, with new functionalities introduced to these structures.
The design introduces a central space within the Upper Town, envisioned as a cascading plateau featuring interconnected footpaths and ramps that greet visitors upon entering
through the northeast tower. Drawing inspiration from the original Mediterranean garden architecture, characterized by dry stone walls and terraced landscapes, these forms are
interpreted and adapted to meet contemporary needs rather than directly replicated.
This approach allows the elements within the space to embody a continuity of local architectural history, marrying traditional features with modern architectural expressions.
The central area will serve as a vibrant public space within the complex, functioning as a summer hub that fosters creativity and community engagement.
