Vojvodina House Reconstruction, Šajkač, SRB

A house in Šajkač in the heart of the Vojvodina region famous for it rich agriculture tradition embraces the modernity.

The task was to create a project for the reconstruction of the existing house in Vojvodina, to which another house had previously been added, as well as to include a summer house with a pool, to organize the yard, and to provide two parking spaces on the plot.

Upon examining the plot and buildings during the visit, we concluded that both houses should be treated as one continuous form. By selecting proper materials and treating the facade, we aimed to connect them into a harmonious whole. The brick was chosen as the most suitable material for this type of task, as it is easily found locally and represents one of the traditional building materials in Vojvodina. By treating the facade in this way, along with replacing the windows and adding specific brise-soleils to each facade opening, we achieved the effect of making the previously two separate houses be perceived as one continuous structure.

The investor requested that we create a “bedem” - a certain kind of wall to provide privacy from the neighbors. We envisioned this wall as the backbone along which, due to the specific shape of the plot, we could arrange the necessary functions.

On the facade of the house oriented toward the garden, the openings were enlarged, further connecting the living area inside the house with the yard and the outside. By creating a porch with a mini Zen garden and positioning a large table outside, we established an extension of the living area where activities that would normally take place indoors can occur during the summer months.

Since there is a septic tank behind the house, we had to position the pool deeper within the plot than initially planned to avoid any issues. To prevent losing space on the plot, we placed the required parking spaces above the tank, which also became a convenient spot for positioning a truck for servicing the tank.

We extended a pergola that starts just above the parking spaces into the pool area above the loungers, making it blend into the roof of the summer house, thereby creating a new harmonious environment.

The summer house was conceived as a simple structure that includes a toilet and kitchen, as well as a storage area for servicing the pool and the yard. It also features a mini bar and a double-sided seating area, with a greater focus on the side facing the pool.

In the design process from the very beginning we aimed to preserve the spirit of the traditional Vojvodina house while modernizing it and enriching its content with features suitable for contemporary needs.
